Dressing Up Bottle & Vases

Vintage bottles are hot accessories in design right now. They're such and easy way to add a little character to a room. Whether you display them empty or with flowers.. a fun way to keep it interesting is to wrap the bottle with natural elements to complement the display or the mood of your home.

I love how we wrapped this neck of this large vintage demijohn in hemp twine and then dangle a starfish from it. This is a great way to dress up a collection of empty bottles on a console table or cabinet.
This is a really inexpensive way to add character but it has a big impact. You can just use what you have around the house to adorn your bottles or vases. Here we used scraps of  birch bark with twine.  You could even layer burlap underneath the bark... laying the wrap is so beautiful with coordinating elements.

Or a simple scrap of burlap by itself will give you a similar effect.
Other things you can use to dress up a bottle or vase: ribbon leftover from gift wrap, all of those extra buttons that come with new clothing, or tie on a piece of jewelry, maybe a stray earring..
Make it fun, make it unexpected, but mostly, make it beautiful.

Nice Mention in premiere issue of Flea Market Gardens Magazine

We're thrilled to be included in the first ever issue of Flea Market Gardens. It's on newstands now. I found this copy at Target, but it can be found at most stores with a large magazine section.
In the "Inspired Shopping" section on page 20 the magazine writes: "Old & new mix with abandon in displays that reach from ceiling to floor."
Another quote says, "The beauty of Gardenology is as inspiring as it is peaceful. It's soothing blend of color and texture creates a comfortable harmony between indoor and outdoor living that makes any visitor want to move right in."
This magazine is very fun and colorful, with many great ideas on reusing everyday items to make your garden one-of-a-kind, and reflective of your personality. There are flowers planted in everything from cabinet drawers, to teapots to high-heeled shoes. So creative!

Coastal Style

We're having an amazing run of weather here in Southern California right now. It's hard to believe we're smack-dab in the middle of winter. It's currently a sunny 71 degrees. Makes you want to head to the beach, sink your toes in the sand and soak up the sun (with a hat and SPF 60, of course.) Not many of us can actually afford to live at the beach, but it doesn't mean we can't pretend....  and this gorgeous book is so inspiring.
Like Gardenology, this beautiful book showcases coastal style that's easy to incorporate into any home.
Soothing neutrals, natural textures, and calming colors are key concepts.

Casual, white slipcovered furniture is the epitome of beach chic. It beckons you to take off your shoes and relax. Add some vintage-looking pieces for an eclectic look, like these pendants or the clock below.

Gardenology Encinitas
When adding coastal style to your home take your cues from the textures and colors of nature. Linen, burlap and cotton are great fabric options to evoke the beach feel.  A color palette of sky blues, cloudy whites, and soft grays help create a soothing home.

The light-wood dining set, open fireplace and high ceilings featured in this Coastal Style photo give a light and airy feel to this room.
Gardenology Encinitas
And if you like the dining room photo from the book, we have this gorgeous harvest table at Gardenology, too.
Accessories are an easy way to add beachy style... sea motif dinnerware, natural shells, breezy aqua napkins, or linen sea life pillows.

This place-setting is an quick, yet, elegant way to add beach style to your dining room.  And when you're done with your dinner party, put the shells and coral in a big bowl on your coffee table or bathroom.
Summer Classics Rustic Collection
One of the best ways to appreciate the beauty of the water and sky is outdoors. Your outdoor spaces should be as well-designed as your indoor ones. We love this seating area from Summer Classics pictured above.. it's the perfect shade of driftwood gray. It's made of resin and looks like wicker that's been sitting in the salt air for a few years, but this will last way longer. If you're not into the rustic look....
Brown Jordan Fusion Collection
..this clean-lined sectional from Brown Jordan is a versatile option with a contemporary feel, yet  comfortable and easy to personalize with throw pillows. A great perch for watching the sunset.
Coastal style at its best is informal, casual, and definitely not perfect.

Atlanta Market Finds - Handcrafted Love

We just returned from a week at the Atlanta Gift Market and found a few items that we are excited about and will be bringing into our stores soon.
These colorful patchwork quilts made from vintage Indian fabrics are so gorgeous. Throw them over a bench or table and your entire room will be instantly transformed. Or drape them over the corner of a sofa for a small pop of color. Each one is handmade and one-of-a-kind.

We are also in love with this handcrafted pottery. Simplistic, versatile and functional, this oil and vinegar set is made from clay from the Andes Mountains in Peru. So lovely on a simple, elegant table.
This rice bowl - beautifully imperfect, with fluid, organic lines.
Love, love, love.
Speaking of love... our designer, Vicki Jansma, is in love with this chair...
The Rowan Wing Chair may be white on the outside, but it's 100% green on the inside. It's frame is made from FSC certified hardwoods. It's cushion is biodegradable, non-toxic rubber latex foam. And not only is it earth-friendly it's deliciously comfortable, too. Vicki says it's perfect for curling up with a cozy throw blanket, cup of tea and your favorite book. We have this in both our Encinitas and Newport Beach stores.

Newport Beach Gardenology January Redesign

Newport Beach Gardenology is in full bloom!! We have just added thousands of new botanicals and hundreds of new succulents, along with numerous new furniture pieces.
Our Derek Bench is unbelievably gorgeous! This stunning, one-of-a-kind piece is upholstered in a beautiful linen fabric that was stamped by hand.  It would make a great banquette in a breakfast nook. This piece would be a show-stopper anywhere you put it.
We just love this whimsical place setting... a large black sea fan on a linen placemat.... so unusual, yet beautiful. This would be adorable for a Sunday brunch. We have a ton more seashells and coral in stock now, also.
We moved around just about everything in the Newport Beach store ... the bed is now by the front door, shelving was rearranged ... it looks like a whole new space.
Nothing says "fresh" like crisp, white bedding. Our luxurious linens feel so great against your skin and is so comfortable, you won't want to get out of bed.
This beautifully-detailed cabinet would be chic way to display your favorite collections.
This new handmade Italian pottery with a sealife motif will add a nice pop of color to any room, and make you feel like you're at the beach even if you're miles away. I love how in this photo the organic shapes of the pottery contrasts with the industrial style table and the baskets and blankets add a cozy texture...
Come experience Newport Gardenology for yourself!
Did you know we have full-service interior designer, also?  We can help you with anything from a tiny powder room to an entire home, or just help you choose the perfect shade of paint. Just ask any sales associate for details.
